Hemp hearts contain a large proportion of Unsaturated fats, these healthy fats are great for our body, but an enemy to keeping your hemp fresh.
The key thing that will make your hemp turn or go rancid is oxygen (Airflow). We recommend that you squeeze out any air from the packet before using our resealing strip.
You can Freeze or Refrigerate your hemp for extra freshness, without altering the molecular structure or flavour. This can make your hemp hearts last over a year.

How can I keep my hemp hearts fresh as an ingredient in cooking?
The best way will be to keep your food sealed – and do all that good stuff to avoid your food from spoiling anyway.
You can also look to use Antioxidants in your food this would be more suitable for adding to oils – You can add Rosemary Extract as a natural Antioxidant.
You can always freeze the food – this will expand the shelf life exponentially and not affect any flavours.

Does the same apply to keeping Hemp Seed fresh?
Hemp seed lasts much longer as it has its own protective shell to keep oxygen out, boasting 4x as much shelf life compared to the dehulled seed. Keeping the Seed cool will keep it fresher for longer. We have climate-controlled storage for all our whole hemp seed that is being used for human consumption. Under the right conditions hemp seed can last up to 3 years in cool storage – but we always use our fresh seed for our products every year to keep our shelf life high for all our products.
How about keeping my Hemp oil Fresh?
The hemp oil is packed with polyunsaturated fatty acids – like omega 3 and 6 in the perfect ratio for your body. But as mentioned above this healthy fat is prone to going rancid. Just remember to seal your bottle – keep it out of direct sunlight ideally in a cool place ideally a fridge and it will keep until the date shown on the bottle.
You will notice the taste profile will get a bit stronger and more bitter – some people like this flavour as it really does add some extra flavour to your dish.
You can also Freeze your oil with no risk of the oil expanding in the glass bottle – as it has extremely low freezing temperatures – this will prolong your oil life considerably.
Did you know that the American airforce used hemp oil in their plane engines as it didn’t freeze at low temperatures?
